"Brave and handsome, all that stuff. Best platoon leader ever." He hesitated for a second. "And do me a favor. Don't mention anything about-" "No," I said, "I won't." pg. 29
I thought this was really ironic because while reading the book you learn that Jimmy feels like it is his fault that Lavender died. Jimmy blamed himself for his death because he was off day dreaming about Martha.
Although this make me wonder if there is something else we do not know about Jimmy. What did he truly mean? Could it be about Martha or the war? Do you think he meant Lavenders death? What do you think?
This was exactly what I was thinking. I am also wondering what he means by "Don't Mention anything about-". Why would Tim put it in his book, there has got to be some importance to that quote. This supports that Tim doesn't tell the whole truth.
ReplyDeleteI agree with that. There was nothing that Jimmy could have done that could have saved Lavender.
ReplyDeleteLater in the book, we also learn that Lt. Cross also feels guilty about Kiowa's death because he established camp on the sewage field. Because he is the leader of the platoon, he feels guilty about everything that happens to his men, even when he didn't do anything wrong. O'Brien also mentions that Lt.Cross really wanted to see he his men as humans; and the cost of this is guilt. This shows the responsibility and sacrifice of leadership.
